7 Day Challenge
Day 2- $$$ Money Monday $$$

1.  Consumption - What did you consume today?

  • Water- 3 glasses of water, a bottle of red Gatorade (if that counts), 13 minute shower, toilet flushes
  • Food- butternut squash soup, chicken, veggies, rice
  • Electricity- I was home sick today so I watched tv and went online for a few hours
  • Gasoline (fossil fuels)- I didn’t use gas and the heat in my house wasn’t on today
  • $$Money$$ - I didn’t spend any money today

2. Reduction - In what areas of your current lifestyle did you try to scale back the use of specific resources?

I was home sick today so I didn’t buy anything, hence a successful Money Monday. I tried to take a shorter shower but that didn’t work out. I didn’t consume much in terms of food, probably because I woke up so late and didn’t feel good. I didn’t eat a lot of meat, only some chicken, and had a lot of veggies. I made a big effort to reduce how much electricity I used today. I only charged my laptop twice (I usually charge it a bunch of times throughout the day), and I tried to stay off of Facebook as much as I could. I watched a movie and a Survivorman marathon for most of the day so that wasn’t so good for my electricity use but I learned a lot about survival and what to do when you don’t have food or shelter. Les Stroud managed to survive with some cashews, one match, some beef jerky, and some extra clothes so that was cool and seeing that definitely put this project into perspective. I did well in terms of fossil fuels because it was so nice out today (I didn’t need to put the heat on). I also didn’t go anywhere.

3.  Sustainability - Are there any changes that you made to your daily routine that you could envision making for the long term?  Can you reduce your consumption permanently?  Why or why not? Please be specific, and provide examples.

Today was a weird day because I didn’t go to school so it wasn’t exactly my same daily routine but I still think I can reduce my time online and on Facebook. I can definitely reduce my meat consumption permanently; it’s not so hard to cut back on that. I don’t really know about how I’ll reduce my fossil fuel consumption because I need to get places via car, bus, etc. but I’d like to start riding my bike places. I can definitely reduce my water consumption permanently as well but I don’t know if that would be good for me health wise.

4.  What did you learn from following the tumblr feed of your peers?  Did one person’s actions resonate with you in a positive way?  Will you adjust your own actions as a result of their post

I think Sean Curry made a good point when he was talking about how it’d be easier to make some of these long-term changes if he didn’t go to school everyday (I think that’s what he said anyway). I agree with this but I also think we still consume a ton at home alone between television, laptops, food, etc. Shoshanna Minsk’s post was also very interesting. Please try to read it if you can it’s pretty powerful and true. I wanted to try to stay serious but I have to say that Connor Higgins’ videos make me LOL and I give him props for not eating for 11 hours. I also have to give Mr. G props on the reduction of coffee consumption.

Everyone seems to be on the same page about consumption and sustainability so far and it’s awesome how everyone seems to be so enthusiastic about it all. I’m going to try to keep my shower time low like everyone else and knowing me I’ll probably try to keep adjusting my actions this week after reading more and more posts.
