1. Consumption - What did you consume today?
- Water- 2 32oz nalgenes/camelbaks, glass of water at dinner, 4-MINUTE SHOWER! A couple flushes, brushed my teeth, washed my hands… I’m thinking of going with hand sanitizer/sanitizer wipes every other day to cut down on water but that could create more waste so I’m going to think about that
- Food- chicken soup, salad, chicken with asparagus and potato things, small apple walnut desert cake
- Electricity- I wasn’t home at all today so I used barely any electricity! I’m only using my computer right now and it is NOT being charged so that’s a big improvement. All my lights are off and my cell phone is not being charged.
- Gasoline (fossil fuels)- I used public transportation and my dad drove me to Copley and that was it.
- $$Money$$ - I didn’t spend any money today!
2. Reduction - In what areas of your current lifestyle did you try to scale back the use of specific resources?
I’ve really scaled back on everything this week. I’ve been taking shorter showers, spending less time on my phone and computer, shutting off all of the lights in my house, and I’ve been trying to get my family to do all of these things as well. It feels good to think I’m making a difference.
3. Sustainability - Are there any changes that you made to your daily routine that you could envision making for the long term? Can you reduce your consumption permanently? Why or why not? Please be specific, and provide examples.
All of the changes I’ve made this week could be permanent (i.e. cutting back on shower time, cutting back on food consumption, cutting back on electricity and the like). It’s really not so hard and you get used to it after a few days. It feels rewarding and it’s almost like a competition for me now to see how much I can reduce.
4. What did you learn from following the tumblr feed of your peers? Did one person’s actions resonate with you in a positive way? Will you adjust your own actions as a result of their post
Once again I have to say it’s awesome how enthusiastic everyone is about this project. Anthony Betances’ posts about if healthy foods good for the environment and the beached whales were SO interesting. I encourage everyone to check out those posts and his page- they got me thinking.
